Where you'll be sleeping at Lewis Reunion

Here's a map of the Little Bear River Resort illustrating the sleeping accommodations for everyone. Thanks to the majority of you for your willingness to sleep in tents.

The 10-day weather forecast projects sun, sun, sun...so many of you may want to bag the tent and sleep under the stars. It should be a fun adventure!

How to get to the 2008 Lewis Reunion site

UPDATE: Please note that Mt. Sterling Road is called 6800 South and is one of the first paved roads as you come out of Sardine Canyon. (We'll try to put up balloons or something.)

Also note that if you get directions via Google Maps, it will take you over some treacherous dirt roads before Sardine Canyon. You're better off going through Sardine Canyon and sticking with the mapped directions below.

Here's a map that's also available as a satellite photo at this website: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=41.593621,-111.868973&spn=0.081522,0.142651&t=h&z=13

Don't forget, access from the north is limited except through Pocatello via Preston.

Hope this helps!

Reunion Demographics: Can you say "33 in diapers"!?!

Houston, we've got a problem.

As we took another look at our family's shifting (can you say upside down?) demographics we have made the startling discovery about those coming to the reunion. There will be:
53 adults
16 teens
9 ages 8-11
17 ages 4-7
19 ages 18m - 3
14 under 18 mos

Yes, that's...
...59 children age 11 and under
...43 children of Primary age and
...33 children in diapers!!

We're not worried about having enough food, but will there be enough room in the dumpster for all the diapers?! :)

It means we're going to need everyone's help in assisting young parents, keeping an eye on little ones so they don't wander off and taking a turn with the children's classes on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

You'll remember in an earlier posting that we assigned different family members to serve as "coordinators" for three different children's classes:
  • 18m-3 years of age (19 total)
  • 4-7 years of age (17 total)
  • 8-11 years of age (9 total)
Now that we know the numbers for each age group, we realize the task is just too big for one coordinator for each group. So we will be assigning more adults to help with these classes. Watch for the list on tomorrow's blog posting.

The important thing is that we need to give some direction to the "coordinators" who are already assigned.

As coordinators of children's classes we ask that you come prepared with ideas and/or materials on how you're going to keep your children's group occupied and having fun. We will assign other adults to help you, but you are responsible to plan what your group will do during your assigned 45-minute period.
Some ideas of what you can do might include:
  • Story time
  • Singing
  • Outdoor games (lots of lawn area)
  • Coloring or crafts
  • etc.
You may have noticed in the coordinator assignments made in an earlier posting that most of the coordinators are young dads or teenagers. Will you mothers help us by posting comments on this blog with ideas for the coordinators?

[EDITOR'S UPDATE: We're already starting to get some great comments from young mothers. Please visit the Comments section of this blog entry. Thank you, Moms, keep'em coming and please help your husbands come prepared!]

And please watch for more assignments on tomorrow's blog posting.

What You Need to Know About Our Reunion Site

Here are some key facts about our reunion site that may help you in your planning for the 2008 Lewis Reunion:

How to get there
There are two ways to get to the Little Bear River Resort. Most of you'll remember the shortcut you took several years ago for our reunion at the nearby Paradise Springs campground.

Coming from the south to Cache Valley
Take I-15 north. Take Exit 362 to Logan. It comes right after the Willard Bay exit and a rest stop. Exit onto Hwy 89 and go past Brigham City and Manatua and through Sardine Canyon.

Shortcut
Just as you come out of Sardine Canyon and enter Cache Valley on Hwy 89 watch for a road that goes off to the right called Mt Sterling Road (6800 South). Follow it to 2400 West, turn right (going south) up the hill. It becomes a dirt road and is now Mt Pisgah or Baxter Hallow Road. Stay on it until you cross the Little Bear River. The entrance to the reunion site is immediately to your left.

Sure Way
The longer, all-pavement way to the Little Bear River Resort: Take US-89 into Cache Valley. Turn right (east) on SR-101. Follow it til you come to 400 West, turn right (south) to Main Street. Turn left on Main and go to SR-65 (a main highway). Turn right (south) on SR-65 toward Paradise. Just as you enter Paradise you will see a welcome sign. Turn right at the first street (8700 South) past the welcome sign. Go west til you come to the sign on the second white fence that reads: "The Little Bear River Resort." Turn right into the resort entrance.

Beware: Road Closed
If you're coming from the north, it won't be easy to get to Logan. Apparently, there is extensive construction on Hwy 30, which is the main connector between Tremonton & I-15 with Cache Valley. So check state highway websites for availability if you're coming from the north.

Facilities
The lodge has many amenities that will make our reunion a pleasant experience. For instance:
• 92 folding chairs (bring camp chairs, if you can; but we'll have plenty regardless)
• 10 round tables and 6 banquet tables
• 9 picnic tables
• Piano
• Carpet throughout
• 2 couches
• Air conditioning
• Lots of electrical outlets (we'll have extension cords)
• Nice covered front porch ideal for outdoor classroom
• Wireless internet access (we're trying to confirm this, but we believe it's true)
• Cell phone coverage (we think; we'll let you know for sure)

Some of the fun features nearby:
• Fire pit with amphitheater seating
• Sandbox for the children (bring your own toys)
• Rope swing
• Porch swing
• Horseshoe pit
• Volleyball
• River/stream...a wet winter and spring may make this more a river, but we're planning for everyone to be able to swim or tube

Weather
• Highs are typically in the high 80s
• Lows are usually in the 50s...so come prepared

More details are coming as to what you should bring to the reunion. But hopefully the above will give you a feel for what to expect.

Get Ready for Tent City: Answers to your questions about bunks, beds and tents

This is going to be the reunion that would Grandpa Lewis proud! The Lewises are going to show just what kind of "Boy Scouts" they really are.

Of course, we can't explain why all those Eagle Scout sons of Malin Lewis are going to be in some cozy bed while women and children will be asleep in their tents (feeling guilty yet?).

Yes, it's going to be a different reunion for our family. More than half of all attending will be in tents. We appreciate you "youngins" allowing the "old folks" and some nursing mothers the luxury of the few beds at the Little Bear River Resort.

Here's what you need to know about the sleeping accommodations at the reunion:

Campers...er, Tenters

Actually, you're really not camping. You're tenting. Yes, you spend the night in a sleeping bag in a tent, but other than that you'll have all the comforts of home. In the lodge there are two large bathrooms, one for the ladies and the other for the gents. Here's what you get:

Ladies Bathroom:
  • 3 toilets (1 handicap)
  • 2 shower stalls
  • 2 sinks
  • Counter space and electrical outlets
Men's Bathroom:
  • 2 toilets
  • 2 shower stalls (1 handicap)
  • 2 sinks
  • Counter space and electrical outlets
We'll provide hand soap, bath soap, inexpensive shampoo and conditioner, papers towels and toilet tissue. Bring your own bath towels and toiletries.

You can set up your tent and bedding on the designated grassy areas near the bunk houses that are situated in a half semi-circle. The largest tents (please bring any family-sized tent, especially those of you sleeping in the cabins) will be used for group "tenting" by teens, older children, etc.

Remember that the nights in northern Utah still get cold (sometimes into the 40's F) during late June. Typical weather is high 80's in the day and low 50's at night. Please come prepared for cool weather at night!

Also, remember that even though you'll be on grass, you'll want to have some padding and protection against insects in the grass as well as mosquitos.

Bunk Houses

There are 4 bunk houses, which have been designated for young mothers with babies. Most of the bunk houses are identical. All have the following:
  • 4 or 8 bunk beds (one bunk house has a double bed)
  • 6 large shelves for placing suitcases
  • Carpeted floors
  • Electric light and electrical outlets
  • Thin mattress on each bed
  • Some floor space (some more than others) for porta-cribs
Bedding is not provided. Please remember to bring your own bedding, either a sleeping bag or sheets and blankets and pillow. You will use the common bathrooms in the lodge, too.

Bunk House Assignments:
  • Bunk House #1: Kristi and Annie
  • Bunk House #2: Ondalynn, Vivienne and Meredith
  • Bunk House #3: Esther, LaDawn and Brenley
  • Bunk House #4: Teresa, Ardene and Michelle
As you can see, the bunk houses are not completely full but all will have babies.

Duplex Cabin

There are two connected cabins, similar to the bunk houses, but they have two double beds in each cabin instead of bunks. Features include:
  • Two double beds with mattresses
  • Shared deck or porch
  • Closer to the lodge than bunk houses (still a 100-yard dash)
  • Hang-up closet
  • Capreted floor
  • Floor space
  • Electric light and outlets
You, too, will need to bring your own bedding. You'll also use the common bathrooms in the lodge. Don't forget to bring camp chairs to enjoy your front porch, which is near the river.

The Wick Lewises and the Peases are renting the duplex cabins.

Motel-Style Rooms

These rooms are located in the east side of the lodge and feature many amenities of a hotel including:

  • Private bath and shower

It's Meal Time! Food & fun at the Lewis Reunion

Everyone is involved in the meals for our Lewis Reunion so here are some of the key details about facilities and meal preparations that you'll want to know before coming. This information supercedes all emails received up to this point (6/3/08, 11:30 PM PDT).

The kitchen and food preparation facilities are not huge, but adequate, with a lot of counter space.

The kitchen has:
  • a 6-shelf convection oven that cooks and warms
  • a 4-burner stove top with oven
  • a double sink
  • a microwave
  • a standard dishwasher
  • a standard-size refrigerator
  • an industrial-size ice making machine for ice chests (to compensate for lack of refrigerator space).
On the patio there is:
  • a 3-burner propane gas grill (propane is provided by resort)
  • a full-size, 30-inch griddle heated by propane (for pancakes, hamburgers, etc.)
What you won't find is:
  • garbage disposal
  • large refrigerator or pantry
We will eat in the air conditioned lodge, where the kitchen is located. There are picnic tables outside for those who want to eat outdoors. We will provide the table coverings.

When its your assigned meal, we ask that you also take responsibility for the set up, take down and clean up. We'll ask everyone else to pitch in and help before and after each meal. Late Add: If Uncles Corwin (family head) or Crismon (reunion host) are not nearby, the food preparers will also call on somone to offer the blessing on the food once you're ready to eat.

Due to the number of cancellations, you will not have to feed as many as originally announced and, as a consequence, the budget for your meal has been reduced. While we have 115 planning to attend, 25 are infants and 24 are ages 3-11. So, we think if everyone will plan to feed about 75 people you'll be just about right.

Here's the amount of money you'll be reimbursed for your meal:
  • $130 for breakfast
  • $130 for lunch
  • $170 for dinner
  • $40 for cracker barrel refreshments
We know this will be tight. It means our meals may need to be a bit simpler than in the past. Remember, you only need to buy food with your money. We are providing the paper goods, utensils, serving bowls, basic supplies such as salt/pepper, flour, baking soda, etc. Contact us if there is something you will need for your meal that you think others might need, too, so we can coordinate with all families and not duplicate.

The menus that have been reserved so far:
  • Monday dinner, Hawaiian Haystacks, CG Lewises
  • Tuesday breakfast, Pancackes, Lintons
  • Tuesday lunch, Sloppy Joes, Allens
  • Tuesday dinner, Chicken Fajitas, SB Lewises
  • Wednesday breakfast, Breakfast burritos, IW Lewises
  • Wednesday lunch, Chili & Chips, CS Lewises
  • Wednesday dinner, Potato Bar, Peases
  • Thursday breakfast, Cold Cereal and Muffins, CS Lewises
Cracker Barrel plans so far are:
  • Monday night, Chips and salsa, McCulloughs
  • Tuesday night, TBA, Duraye
  • Wednesday night, Rootbeer Floats, SB Lewises
Reimbursement

We will reimburse you at the reunion for the exact amount you spend on purchasing the food for your assigned meal. Please be prepared to tell us exactly how much you spent. You do not have to submit receipts.

We recommend you purchase the food before coming to the reunion. There is a large Macey's in Providence, about 15 minutes away. There is a grocery store, but smaller and likely a bit more expensive, in Hyrum, about 10 minutes away. You may want to go into town and purchase your fresh food on the day of your assigned meal, or you can bring it with you and get in on ice immediately when you arrive.

2008 Malin & Myreel Lewis Reunion

Attention Malin & Myreel Lewis Posterity:

This is the beginning of a series of posts to this blog to give our family the details you'll need to attend the 2008 Lewis Reunion in Paradise Utah.

Because so many on our email list have been unable to receive photos, our hope is that we'll be able to provide you with more photos of the resort so you'll know what to expect.

By the way, all of these photos come from Aunt Dantzelle, who so kindly scoped out the Little Bear River Resort for us nearly two years ago. A special thanks to Aunt Dantzelle!

Reminder of the key information:
When: June 23-26, 2008
Times: Arrive 2 - 5 PM Monday, 6/23 and leave before noon on Thursday, 6/26
Where: Little Bear River Resort, Paradise, Utah

Because there is no actual address for the location we can't Mapquest it for you, but we will post driving directions soon. For those who attended the Lewis Reunion in 2000 and 2002, the Little Bear River Resort is next door directly west of the Paradise Springs location.

We think you're going to love this site because of the expansive grassy areas for playing and an air conditioned lodge that should be able to seat all of us. Below are some photos of the lodge and some of the facilities. More details to come in another blog entry soon.
